4 Ways to Enjoy the Fall Colors
Rumor has it that the fall leaves and their beautiful colors peak next weekend, September 29th-30th! Everyone in Durango loves watching the leaves – specifically the aspens – change color each year!
Just taking a quick drive north can reveal some of the prettiest fall colors most people have ever seen! Here are three ways to check out those fall beauties for all interests and availability!
1.) Spending a day at Purgatory – Hanging out at Purgatory for an afternoon can offer views of changing leaves no matter what your preference – from patio dining, 4×4 roads around the back of the resort, or any of the numerous hiking trails!
2.) Hiking Castle Rock & Engineer – These are two of the most recommended fall hikes for views of the mountains with all the various stages of changing aspens. While neither hike is quite for the hiking newbie, they are both achievable with lots of water and frequent breaks!
3.) Take a drive on the Million Dollar Highway – They didn’t name the highway after the fall leaves necessarily, but they definitely make for some million dollar views! Passing through Molas Pass onto Red Mountain Pass offer some gorgeous sites with yellow and red aspens flagging the way.
4.) Lime Creek Road – Just this weekend, my family drove just 20 minutes from our home in the Animas Valley to Lime Creek Road. We parked at the Spud Lake Mountain trail head. Rather than taking the popular trail though, we walked along Lime Creek Road. It used to be the road to Silverton before the highway. Today, 4×4 drivers, hikers, and mountain bikers enjoy the path. The views were stunning, peaceful, and exactly what we were looking for – a relaxing walk with all the fall beauty!
No matter your preference, there’s fall color viewing open to you! As if we needed another reason to love Durango, this weekend’s views might make the list!
